Civil Unrest, Planned Demonstration in Port-au-Prince, Haiti

On Wednesday, February 26, 2014, U.S. Department of State issued the following message:

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

The U.S. Embassy has received reports of planned demonstrations in Port-au-Prince for tomorrow, Thursday, February 27, 2014, in the downtown area, specifically from St Jean Bosco Church (Downtown) to Champs-De-Mars.

The expected route is from St Jean Bosco Church (Downtown) via Blvd. La Saline, Rue St Martin, Delmas 2- Delmas 18 (Carrefour Pean Area), Solino, Rue Montalais, the National Palace to end on Rue Capois near the Haitian American Institute (Champs-De-Mars). Please note that the route may be altered between now and tomorrow. The Embassy has not yet imposed area restrictions on its personnel, but is urging caution and planning of alternate travel routes, if necessary. Please remember that demonstrations in Port-au-Prince can arise and escalate quickly, so the Embassy urges all Americans to exercise caution and avoid these areas as much as possible. Should you find yourself among or near protesters, get out of the area without delay.

We strongly recommend that all U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Haiti enroll in the Department of State's secure on-line Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to contact you in an emergency.

Travelers are advised to regularly monitor the travel information page of the State Department's website where you can find current Travel Warnings for Haiti, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Haiti. For additional information, refer to "A Safe Trip Abroad" on the State Department's website.

Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for up-to-date information on travel restrictions. You can also call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free from within the United States and Canada, or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
